Memes, we use them but where did they start?

Britannica defines a meme as a unit of cultural information spread by imitation. The term meme (from the Greek mimema, meaning “imitated”) was introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work The Selfish Gene.

That’s right, meme has a definition and a history instead of a fictitious meaning that I believed.

“In the early 21st century, Internet memes, or memes that emerge within the culture of the Internet, gained popularity, bringing renewed interest to the meme concept. Internet memes spread from person to person through imitation, typically by e-mail, social media, and various types of Web sites. They often take the form of pictures, videos, or other media containing cultural information that, rather than mutating randomly, have been deliberately altered by individuals. Their deliberate alteration, however, violates Dawkins’s original conception of memes, and, for that reason, despite their fundamental similarity to other types of memes, Internet memes are considered by Dawkins and certain other scholars to be a different representation of the meme concept.” – Brittanica

Tips on creating memes

Step 1: We need to understand the basis of where the meme comes from. Understanding this makes it easier to create another one. Do the research, know your memes!

Step 2: Once finding the right meme you have to get creative enough to put some text to it that makes sense, usually being relatable works well. Can’t just toss any text on it and hope it works. We are all about infamy and instant satisfaction so we need the meme to be memorable. Don’t forget to check your spelling, nothing is worse than having a golden meme with misspelled words.

“That moment when you spell a word so wrong that even auto-correct is like, I’ve got nothing man!”

Step 3: Using the correct tools to create. Imgflip, Meme-Generator, or Adobe are good starters. Once everything is complete, send it to the internet! Now sit back and wait for the likes.

Short and simple right?
